What are flower essences

Flower essences, also known as flower remedies, are based on vibrational energetics, and work by imprinting the life-force and vibrational signature of the flower within a water-based matrix. They can be used to stimulate the body's natural ability to heal, return to homeostasis, and achieve new levels of consciousness.

Flower essences, an ancient practice

Flower essences have been used in many cultures throughout the world for thousands of years. The first documented use of flower essences was in ancient Egypt where the healing qualities of flowers were recorded on papyrus scripts.

In the 12th century, famous herbalist, writer, and mystic Abbess Hildegard von Bingen was the first European to write about the medicinal properties of plants. Followed by Paracelsus, the Swiss physician, medical professor, and parent of modern alchemy. Both are reported to have collected the dew from flowers to treat their patients ailments.

Other cultures who utilised the healing qualities of flowers included Greeks, Malays, Romans, Indians, Sumerians, Asians, Australian Aboriginals and the Native Americans among others.

Flower essences in modern times

Dr Edward Bach, a British Doctor, Bacteriologist, and Homeopath, pioneered the rediscovery of flower essences in modern historical times with his Bach Remedies that are incredibly popular throughout the world today. This made the ancient healing practice available to the modern man and opened the door to many essences we now have available and continue to make in alignment with the expansion of human consciousness.

The Australian Bush Flower Essences by Ian White are also notable and a favourite of ours.

Dis-ease state

Our understanding of what creates dis-ease in the body is becoming better understood as science catches up with traditional healing modalities. Many traditional healing modalities that have been used successfully for millennia operate under the notion that physical disease is the manifestation of emotional imbalances which create energy blockages within our being. We know that emotions can have strong acute effects on our physical body. This is evident in the form of tears when we are upset or by flushing red in the face when angry or embarrassed. What is often missed is the ability for long held emotions to lead to chronic health challenges. When we experience dis-ease, this is our bodies way of telling us something is not right and by listening to our body we can identify and address it. By addressing the root cause of a disease state we can experience far reaching resolute of health challenges.

Evidence of the above in practice is most notable in the area of Acupuncture which is a traditional form of energy medicine that originated in China. Acupuncture uses fine needles inserted into different locations on the body to remove energy blockages and reestablish the flow of energy (qi).

There are now many studies available attesting to the effectiveness of this widely accepted energy healing treatment used by millions of people around the world. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative health (NCCIH), a governmental body, notes; that it has been proven to help in cases of: low back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis, knee pain, and headache and migraine, and acknowledge it may be useful for many other conditions.

Energy medicine

“Future medicine will be the medicine of frequencies” - Albert Einstein.

Vibrations underlie virtually every aspect of nature. At a basic level, all life depends upon molecules interacting through vibrating or oscillating energy fields. Virtually all that we know about living systems is based on the analysis of vibrations.

In the living body, each electron, atom, chemical bond, molecule, cell, tissue, organ (and the body as a whole), has its own vibratory character. Since living structure and function are orderly, biological oscillations are organized in meaningful ways, and they contribute information to a dynamic vibratory network that extends throughout the body and into the space around it. 'Energy medicines' and 'vibrational medicines' seek to understand this continuous energetic matrix, and to interact with it to facilitate healing (Vibrational Medicine, Gerber, 1988),

Vibrations are a fundamental part of physics. There is a wide spectrum of electromagnetic vibratory frequencies, covering some 90 octaves. Any therapeutic interaction, whether it uses sound, heat, laser beams, herbs, plants, aromas, or movements, involves one or more portions of this energy spectrum.

The science of vibrations applies to all clinical methods. Regardless of the philosophy of the technique being used.

Flower essences as frequency medicine

The way flower essences work is understood when we consider that everything in the universe, including humans and plants, are made up of and impacted by energy. As discerned by scientific advances, it is well established and accepted that the basic building blocks for all things in existence are atoms. Atoms emit and absorb electromagnetic waves of varying frequencies when they transition between different energy states. This translates to everything in the universe, even objects that appear static, being constantly in motion, vibrating, oscillating, and resonating at various frequencies.

The Kybalion, an occult classic, propagates the idea that mind and thought are the ultimate forces behind the universe. The third principle that is addressed in The Kybalion is the Principle of Vibration. “This principle explains that the differences between different manifestations of Matter, Energy, Mind, and even Spirit, result largely from varying rates of vibration.” (The Kybalion, Three Initiates, pg 16)

Einstein stated that everything has a frequency set point, and that all beings and things in the universe vibrate at a certain level. For example, people have different vibratory rates when they're ecstatic or in joy, and when they're angry or bored. The brain emits electrical impulses that create brain waves, which can range in frequency from 0.1 to over 100 Hz. Different brain wave frequencies are associated with different states of mind - see study.

Since matter is composed of charged particles such as electrons and protons, all vibrating matter is emitting electromagnetic fields (Oschman, 2015, pg 23). Through the use of flower essences we can manipulate our energetic frequency to manifest the reality we want.

A recent study published in 2019 showcased the power of vibrations and how sensitive we and our environment are to these vibrations occurring in nature. Within minutes of Bees emitting pollinator frequencies, flowers in the nearby area responded by mechanically vibrating their petals (as measured by laser vibrometry) and increasing nectar sugar concentration to attract bees and increase their chances of cross pollination. Once the bees land on the flowers the pollen is attracted to the bees due to the electrostatic forces similar to the effect that can be seen when rubbing a balloon.

Mechanism of action

Flower essences are energetic in nature, and work via resonance - the phenomenon that enables electromagnetic fields produced in one place to affect things at a distance (Oschman, 2015, pg 23).  In Physics, resonance is defined as the tendency of any object to oscillate or vibrate at maximum amplitude at certain frequencies (Oschman, 2015, pg 25) While we may think the strength of the signal will determine its impact, it is rather the frequency that determines whether it will be beneficial “ Very weak energy fields at the appropriate frequencies can be profoundly therapeutic.” (Oschman, 2015, pg 24). This is why flower essences, while incredibly gentle, are also incredibly powerful healing agents. Flower essences operate under the principle of resonance to harmonise the subtle human bio-energetic field through sympathetic resonance. This means they work by supporting and stimulating the body’s natural healing processes rather than suppressing symptoms driven by malfunctioning physiological processes that are commonly seen with modern medicine.

The human skeleton is made up of calcium crystals, and the hair, skin and nails: silica crystals. When flower essences are given, the crystals in the body transmit and amplify these unique frequencies, similar to how radios utilise quartz crystals for this same purpose.

The body also contains what is know as the living matrix. The living matrix is defined as the continuous molecular fabric of the organism, consisting of fascia, the other connective tissues, extracellular matrices, integrins, cytoskeletons, nuclear matrices and DNA. The extracellular, cellular and nuclear biopolymers or ground substances constitute a body-wide reservoir of charge that can maintain electrical homeostasis - see study.

The living matrix, contains many materials that have inductance and capacitance properties (Oschman, 2015, pg 28). Any object that is electrically conductive will have antenna properties. Metallic wires are good antennas, and many molecules, including DNA are referred to as molecular wires, and are therefore good antennas as well. At body temperatures, all of the molecules in the body are vibrating. Some of this vibratory energy is converted into electromagnetic fields (radio waves and light) that can travel through space and can cause vibrations in other resonant molecules a distance away (Oschman, 2015, pg 29).

“Molecules can behave as resonant antennas, meaning that they can radiate and absorb electromagnetic fields” (Oschman, 2015, pg 26). This is how the healing frequencies of flower essences can be used to harmonise the subtle-energy bodies and promote equilibrium. There is no physical remnants of the flowers in the final dosage product, it is purely energetic which therefore makes flower essences incredibly safe for all living beings.

Intricate energetic interactions occur between nearby individuals, even if they are not in physical contact. Seeing and talking with another person are energetic interactions, involving light and sound vibrations. Information can be transferred from one organism to another via energy fields, and living systems are very sensitive to them. Add therapeutic intention and touch to the equation, and whole new dimensions of subtle but measurable exchanges are brought into play. This highlights the importance of the intention of the practitioner when flower essences are being created. This is further supported by the observer effect a well known phenomenon in quantum physics that occurs when the act of observation alters the behaviour of a system or the particles being observed.

How to identify the healing qualities of flowers

The healing properties of flowers are identified by way of the Doctrine of Signatures. This is where a feature of a plant - shape, colour, texture, taste, growth, scent - indicates its healing properties. An example of this can be seen in the Casuarina glauca (She Oak). The female flowers of this magnificent tree occur in globular heads with the styles hanging out to catch the wind similar in a way to how the fine hair like cilia of the fallopian tubes within the female reproductive system wait to catch the egg ejected from the ovaries during ovulation. The female flowers continue to grow into nut like fruits which are the same size and similar shape to that of the female ovaries. She Oak is a popular Australian Bush Flower Essence prescribed mainly for afflictions of the female reproductive system. It promotes female hormonal balance, fertility and conception.

“Nature marks each growth…according to its curative benefit.” Paracelsus

How flower essences are made

When flower essences are made, the selected flowers are steeped in a bowl of water in the sun for a period of time to transfer the unique vibratory energy pattern from the flowers to the water. The water containing the energetic imprint of the flowers is collected, stabilised, diluted and then prescribed for people presenting with the appropriate indications.

Water is an excellent medium for capturing energetic frequencies as can be seen by Dr Masaru Emoto’s work - see study. Using high-speed photography, Dr Masaru Emoto showcased in his work how crystals formed in frozen water reveal changes when specific, concentrated thoughts are directed towards them. He found that water from clear springs and water that has been exposed to loving words show brilliant, complex and colourful snowflake patterns. In contrast, polluted water, or water exposed to negative thoughts, forms incomplete, asymmetrical patterns with dull colours. When we remember humans are mostly water, the gravity of this knowledge really sinks in. It’s important to speak nicely to ourselves, and if this is something we struggle with, try a flower essence :)

What you can expect

Flower essences, while used mostly for their emotional healing abilities, also have positive effects on our psychological, spiritual and physical states. Generally, flower essences will be felt as positive shifts in mood, energy, symptom(s) abatement and positive outlook. Depending on how sensitive we are to flower essences, the healing effects can be felt sometimes immediately or more commonly in the days and weeks after with 2 weeks being the generally accepted time frame for the essences to work their magic. There are some instances where essences may need to be taken for longer for example in certain cases of longstanding symptoms or emotional states such as deep held grief. Adults, children, babies, animals, and even plants and spaces can all benefit from the energetic healing abilities of flower essences.

Many people have had positive outcomes working with flower essences. See our testimonials for a better idea of what you can expect.
